“What do I want to do with my life?” was a question I had been asking myself for a long time as I looked out the window and saw a vast, unoccupied space where the old Wien Südbahnhof once stood.
In November 2010, I lived in an apartment right before what is now Wien Hbf. At the time, it was a construction site. It had been a short time since the old train station was razed to make space for the new station.
Months earlier, I had graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering, and I was amazed at the scale of the project. Witnessing the movement of equipment and people was mesmerizing.
I didn’t know it then, but just as the land in front of me was transforming into a new transportation hub, I was going through a transformation of my own that put me on the path of software engineering.
In August 2023, I visited Vienna with my family. As I stood by the entrance to the finished station, looking at the apartment building where I lived years earlier, I had flashbacks of those days when my most important worry was figuring out what I wanted to do with my life.
I’m still looking for that answer, but everything I’ve done in its pursuit has led me through a phenomenal path. I wouldn’t change a thing.
